Make Chemical Plants Safer
Explosions, spills and other accidents happen. When they do, exposure to toxic chemicals threatens over 100 million people who live, work, study, or play around chemical plants and refineries. President Obama called these plants “stationary weapons of mass destruction spread all across the country.”
Fortunately, this is a very solvable problem. Safer cost-effective chemicals are readily available, and hundreds of facilities have already converted to these safer chemicals. But with more than 100 million people still at risk every day, these voluntary measures are not enough.
In 2013, President Obama issued an Executive Order directing the EPA to issue rules to “enhance safety and security of chemical facilities,” but a year and a half later, we’re still left with weak voluntary measures.
Please tell the EPA to move forward and finalize their rules.
